Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery
Many patients today are faced with a devastating diagnosis: cancer. Now there is a groundbreaking option for treating difficult cases. Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery may deliver improved outcomes and a better quality of life.
Novalis is a dedicated system for stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy (SRS/SRT). This technologically advanced approach to SRS/SRT is quickly becoming the standard of care for cancer treatment with more than 60 sites worldwide.
Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery treats brain, head & neck, spine, liver, lung and prostate lesions, as well as non-cancerous disorders such as acoustic neuromas, trigeminal neuralgia, arteriovenous malformations and certain functional disorders.
Novalis delivers a precise dose of high-energy radiation to shrink or control the growth of a tumor by killing tumor cells or interfering with their ability to grow. By continuously shaping the treatment beam to match the size and shape of a patient's tumor from all angles, Novalis ensures that the tumor receives the full prescription dose of radiation while protecting healthy tissue. Novalis is:
- Non-invasive
- Painless
- Bloodless
- Performed as an outpatient procedure
- Precise to protect healthy tissue
During a typical treatment, the patient is placed on a custom-made cushion that is molded to the body to ensure accurate positioning for imaging and treatment. For some patients with brain tumors or malformations, a localizing ring is affixed to the head on the day of the procedure only. A series of images - Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or both - are acquired to locate the tumor or lesion with accuracy, giving your physician the exact dimensions and parameters of the tumor and its position in relation to other structures within the body. A customized treatment plan is developed for each patient. The treatment session typically takes 30 - 45 minutes. There is no discomfort and patients can communicate with their physician throughout the procedure. Patients can resume their normal routine the same day.
